Ageing Languedoc-Roussillon Population

Recent reports from the National Statistics Bureau, the INSEE, are the cause of some concern in certain departments of the Languedoc-Roussillon where the growing population is also ageing. The Aude, the Pyrenees Orientales and the Lozere departments of the region are all faced with similar issues regarding the advancing years of the largest portion of their residential population - such as adequate provision of services such a retirement homes and home care. For example, in 2005 the population of the Aude consisted of 1 in 4 people being over the age of 60. However, projections from the INSEE show that by 2030 this will rise to 1 in 3. The region’s government will have, then, to deal with the economic consequences of a less active population. Overall the region will also benefit from migration - the Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most popular areas for families to relocate to - but this positive migration may not be enough to counter the ageing population.
