Local papers have been debating the results of a poll undertaken by the
IFOP marketing research company published this week which shows that
France is divided in two with regard to the question of banning
bullfighting. According to the poll, exactly 50% of people questioned
are in favour of banning the sport. However, banning the events to
under 16 year olds seems to be a more popular idea with 60% of people
questioned agreeing with that proposition. Interestingly, the results
showed no clear cut distinction in terms of gender, age or geographical
location within France, though as expected the northern departments
with no bullfighting traditions were a little more against bullfighting
- 58% against in Nord-Pas de Calais compared to 50% in Provence.
However, it is also true that the question as to whether people were
pro or against bullfighting was not posed, rather the question was
whether there should be a ban or not. IFOP representative, Jerome
Fourquet, was quick to point out that one could not like bullfighting
but not necessarily want a complete ban.
