According to local newspapers the Pyrenees Orientales (PO) department
is the most dynamic department in the whole of France when it comes to
renewable energy strategies. In the two years since the introduction of
the DERBI project label (Développement des énergies renouvelables dans le bâtiment et l’industrie),
the PO has seen at least 50 construction projects using eco-friendly
technologies such as solar energy panels and wood burning stoves,
including larger scale projects such as the Port Vendres terminal for
fruit farmers, the Pre-Vert residence at Moyen-Vernet, the Jean-Lurcat
Lycee in Perpignan and the Claude-Simon school in Mas Vermeil. This
effort is set to continue into the future as more and more public
buildings in the department are being designed with ecological
principles at heart.
