For the third year in a row the Languedoc-Roussillon has seen an increase in the numbers of tourists visiting the region, with reports showing a 1.3% increase in numbers in 2007 compared to 2006. However, 2007 did not start well, with a drop of 5.8% recorded in the first quarter, attributed to the lack of snow at the usually popular mountain resorts last winter . For the rest of the year, April was very good but then May and June suffered - possibly because of the impending presidential elections. Figures for July show that tourist numbers were stable, that August saw a 2.6% increase and that the Rugby World Cup had a positive impact on results for the final quarter. Of the 101.5 million tourist nights spent in the region in 2007, open-air accommodation showed the biggest increase: 4.1% up compared to 2006. On the national level, the Languedoc-Roussillon welcomed the biggest increase in tourist numbers, with the Provence/ Cote-d’Azur coming in second place.
