A party of pleasure boat sailors reported the sighting of a shark off
the Pyrenees Orientales coast near Argeles on Friday 12th October. The
shark measured roughly 3 metre long and was perfectly still in the
water. The Argeles port authority officials were contacted and a watch
was out out 500m from the coast, which enabled them to get photographs
of the shark. Representatives of the Banyuls Oceanographic Observatory
were able to confirm that it was a relative of the dogfish species and
not dangerous to humans; they suspect that the shark was attracted to
the area thanks to large amounts of plankton having collected along the
coast after recent rain.
